How make up can be a part of taking pride in your appearance.

Make-up has changed since the 18th century when it was much less gender based, with men and women wearing make-up.  Make-up back then was also used exclusively by the wealthy, and dangerous to use as much of the make-up was lead based and therefore poisonous.  These days there is a lot of dialogue in society about the make-up and the fashion industry and whether it is a good thing or bad thing, and psychologists have also been drawn into these debates.   I do not think the answer is as black and white as a simple yes or no answer.  I would instead focus on your motivations behind wearing make-up and your thoughts and feelings in relation to wearing make- up.   Make-up can be playful like when you put some on for a fancy dress party.  It is also natural to care about your appearance, and make-up can contribute to your sense of pride in your appearance.   Having your eye-lashes done or having a make-up consultation can all be part of looking after yourself or treating yourself like paying for a good massage.   I think if make-up starts to feel like a pressure to you, or you find you worry a lot about not looking good then it might be worth taking a step back and asking if perhaps you are feeling unconfident or uncertain about yourself,  and hoping that make-up will make those feelings go away.  If this is the case, I think working on your self-confidence is more useful.   If your motivation for using make-up is to look perfect or better than everyone else then I would also say that this can feel pressuring, and ultimately be a source of disappointment as it is not possible to be perfect or better than everyone else.   But doing something because you value yourself and take pride in your appearance is a good thing and make-up can be a part of this.
